I have a '65 Chevy C10 with a 230 and 3speed. The 230 knocks at highway speeds, so a new engine may be needed soon.
What is required to swap in a 292? I understand the passenger side motor mount location changed for the 292. Can I use the 230 motor mount and move it to the 292 location, or is there a specific "perch" for the 292?
Thanks,
Gene

Dear Gene;
Check with Larry (Novaman) on that. He's worked a lot on those engines.
Those (292") were made for trucks so it shouldn't be a problem and a good choice too.
Good luck, John M.....

john, Larry is a 250 enthusiast....
right Larry?
and no, you cannot use same frame mount bracket(this is the correct word vs motor mount-that is the rubber part)-but many call it a motor mount....(the part bolted to the engine is the engine bracket)...we all usually refer to this setup as a motor mount....but when searching for these, if you use these terms, its easier to find the brackets you need-seems motor mount is too generic
the 292 has a special 1 on the passenger side.....
I could take pictures and send them to Larry, hopefully he could post them-they show difference in the truck frame mount brackets-a 230/250 passenger side bracket vs a early 60's -72 passenger side bracket vs 73-87 passenger side bracket......

Just because i only Race the 250s for now doesn't mean I don't know the 292s But anyway your right The Frame mounts are not the same. to save some money look around the bone yards/junk yards for any pick-up, Vans, Older SUVs and even the bigger Box trucks ( Ups ,Bread trucks even the Older small school buses had the 292s)I was in a scrap yard just a few weeks ago and they had a few UPs trucks with the 292s in them. One even had the dual exhaust. But anyway If you don't have any luck Let me know and I'll go see if they are still there. hope this helps }[oooooo]

hello...good comment Larry...dont take this the wrong way Larry, I am NOT questioning your knowledge on 292's, its just that its different after actually having the 292 after having the 250 that you find out the differences-havent you stated you havent actually run a 292 for street or race?-if i am wrong , I am sorry....for those that are interested I have had 4 292's after 3 250's over 25 yrs,- its a different thing to understand the differences until you actually have had both running....this way you can actually experience what works and what doesnt....some here may be interested in my knowledge and appreciate it and some might not-that still doesnt change what my experience shows....I keep finding out more and more about these engines-its amazing......Its nice we can share what works...helps waste time and $$$$$-because i use to waste lots of $$$$$$$$$$$$ thinking i knew better than the old timers-now i realize they are the ones that REALLY do know-part of what I share is from them and part from what I have actually done myself.....
John , maybe you didnt know my experience with the 292-thought you may be interested, maybe not.....
Larry, I have all 3 sets of the frame mount brackets....I could send you pictures if you have a place to post them.....what do you think?

I have more then enough space to post them. this one reason why i pay for the web site Lee. and the first 292 i owned was in a 67-68? carry-all what they called a 3/5 door it only had one driver side door 2 on the passanger side and then the 2 in the back. But was a Bone stock motor&truck. but anyway that's irrelevant at this point to me. all he was asking is about the mounts and what was required to make the swap. }[oooooo]

thanks for info....all i am trying to let be known is I am currently a 292 enthusiast with over 4 yrs of 292 street experience(on 2 nd yr of racing-lots more to be learned about that!!!!LOL) on a day to day basis-thats all....for those who have 292 questions, i hope i can help...what i dont know now i hope to in future... all i am trying to do is show actual true experience. If i say something that others find different-well do SHARE what u know- I am sharing what i know.....
I just thought John or others here might not know my experience...just trying to help those wanting and needing actual experience.....i had 250's 1st then 292's-for best results it better to approach these engines differently-but ........ I keep learning more and more ....is anybody else learning more and more?

I did this exact change in my 1965 Short-box fleetside. Just bolted in the frame bracket from the 292 equipped truck (the holes were already there) and used the original 3 speed bellhousing but installed a S-10 5 speed trans in it and used a driveshaft from a 1955 Chev car....fit right in. Now have an HEI in it along with an Offenhauser cover and intake, a Holley style carb from Tom Langdon and a set of Dyno-Max coated headers..fit real nice. Just trying to get it repainted right now and run it for the summer and then maybe we will contact you Lee about some ideas for the motor. Everyday driver so don't want to go stupid on it, maybe a little head work and a mild cam. You will definetly like this etup in your pickup. Good Luck
