Ive currently got a 292 and i cant get the alternator mount sorted out. I cant seem to get the pulleys to align very well. I have the deep Groove stuff installed from the truck the engine came out of, but i dont know if im doing something wrong. Is there a special water pump that needs to be used? the pulley i have i had to use some spacer behind the pulley make it all line up. Do i need to change harmonic balancers? i just need a setup that works.

I was told with the 292 I am currently working on that there is a specific two groove water pump pulley for the 292 and that they are not easy to come by. I haven't located one yet.

It looks to me like you need a 292 lower alternator bracket. Nice pictures.
Drew, Those pulley's can't be hard to find. Tom

Drew, Those pulley's can't be hard to find. Tom I am with tlowe. Water pump seems to be aligned nicely with the crank pulley. It's the alternator that needs to move forward . . .

See that Water pump Pulley only fits that well when there is a 3/8's spacer behind the pulley in front of the water pump. the pulley doesn't even really fit without it, it get real close to the water pump, i actually think it would rub.
So 292's have a specific lower alternator mount?

Just a WAG but it looks as if the damper is not fully seated given the space between the timing tab and the damper??????

Did you drill and tap the crank snout before you installed the balancer.

Drew, Those pulley's can't be hard to find. Tom Sorry. Not trying to steal this post and hope you are right tom. I'm not complaining tho as the 292 was free. I was told it was a 2 groove water pump pulley originally.

Is the crank snout supposed to be flush with the Hub on the Harmonic Balancer? The crank stud is back about 1/4 of an inch or so from the face of the balancer...

No, there is usually a gap like that. Just checking if you used a correct balancer installation tool or a Hammer. Its easier to tell if its fully seated when using the right tool.

Another way to align the alternator would be to use a spacer behind the pulley of the alternator. A flat washer, the type used on a multi-fit mag wheel that uses a wheel nut with the type of threads that go down into the wheel hole, works perfectly. My wheels use a 7/16" wheel nut with a shoulder that the washer butts up against. It's thick and the I.D. is almost exactly the O.D. of the gm shaft. I used one on my 261 to line up the alternator when I did a conversion from the gennie.

just make the holes in the alternator mount oval, so you could push it a little more forward....
