If he was going to do that he would be better off with a good urethane clear. But if you want a metal look and last you can get a pint of gray epoxy and a pint of black epoxy and mix it to a dark gray to simulate fresh metal. This will give you a fresh metal look and will seal the metal from moisture and such. Just make sure the metal is cleaned good with a waterbourne wax and grease remover. If you want it to have some shine to it you can then clear over it with no problem as far as adhesion is concerned.As long as the metal parts are not in direct sunlight and you use a good quality epoxy you can just leave it with out the clear on it. Two or three good wet coats will provide you with great protection. If you want anything to last for years stay away from the stuff in a rattle can.
