Hi,i have a ? for the drag racers.I am building a 32 austin bantam altered and will be powered by a 292,around 12 to 1 compression,615 lift cam.It will weigh roughly 1800 lbs.This will be just a foot brake car[no trans brake]Max rpm will be 6000 to 6500.Which trans will work the best behind this 292?What converter would work best[stall and diameter]?I am not new to racing,just new to these inlines and got bored with the same old SB and BB chevys.Thanks

Glide with turbo shaft. Use a 8"converter with 4500 stall. It will not be a problem to hold in the lights with the foot brake and will leave like a rocket.I really like TCI #254013.--Paul

Glide for sure. Its lighter and has less rotating parts so absorbs less horsepower. They are available with a couple of different low gear ratios for racing. With the right rear gear ratio and tire diameter you can create a really good combination. Both Jegs and Summit list a lot of 'Glide drag racing parts and if you check them out you can see just what is availeble.

Ok... One more then... Can you rebuild a 'glide with the 1.82 low gear to be as tough as the 1.76 gear ratio? Can I put other gears in there and not spend a fortune?

Actually I believe the 1.82 was a stronger planetary gear system, but I've used them both successfully with 650-700 hp.The 1.82 gears were in the transmissions that were made from 62-64( Coarse spline). I believe when Chevy went to the longer tailshaft in 65 they also changed to 1.76 low and fine spline yoke.Making the driveshaft longer or shorter( which ever is needed) might be cheaper than after market parts.Most of my racing in recent years has been 1/8 mile with occasional 1/4' mile passes butI can get several years of racing out of either combination before I even "fresh" them up. I think the quaility of the converter has more to do with How long they live. Just my 2-cents ---Paul
