Well, almost 6 weeks after swapping out the 327 for a Goodwrench 292 in my 76 chevy C10, I have to say "this was a dynamite swap"! Average mileage is 16mpg with the 3 speed manual and 3:08 rear gearing. Turns 3000rpms bat 65mph and takes so little gas pedal to hold this speed that passing is a smooth rush. Must have a good motor because it is smoother than the original 250 and much better than that V-thingy and almost equal to the torque at speed as the 327...Thanks for all the words of encouragement, will be sharing more later.

I think a good 292's torque feels more like the 454 bigblock. The L6 totally blows the SBC away on off-the-line torque. [IMHO]

'68OrangeSunshine: I would normally agree with you on the SB thing but this 327 was built with torque in mind, 305 small valve heads, single 2-1/2" diameter exhaust with a high flow muffler and a Holly 2bbl carb. It did just fine with a 2 horse stock trailer behind but that duty is only 5% of the truck's actual use. This is one of the reasons why I made this change and am so pleased with this arrangement I can hardly stand it! So wish I had done this earlier, would have saved me some $$$$$. Now...if I could go to a higher rear gear and a 5 speed OD tranny, I would think I died and went to six cylinder heaven!

They were great 'workhorses' in Tow Trucks too.
Pulled everything all over town & through the mountains as well.

To bad GM had to "de-tune" them for SMOG.

I'm building one +.060 for my 66 C-20 flatbed with duals.

Happy trails. \:\)
